New Ticket Pricing Policy

From Aramazd Stepanian

As a lifelong socialist and believer in the value of totally accessible art, I have always endeavored to keep the ticket prices of any theatre production or event that I have organized as low as possible. This has, more often than not, led to financial losses, that in turn have hindered me from doing as much work as otherwise I would have been able to do.

Now, with Luna Playhouse, I am no longer a single person producing work for its own sake and the fulfillment of my artistic and political ideals. I am now also responsible to my partner and the ever growing number of company members and devoted audiences. I have to make sure that our work continues uninterrupted and the playhouse remains -- to put it simply -- solvent.

And how do we do that, when we only have 40 seats and overhead costs of $4000 a month?

One immediate and obvious answer is:

Higher Ticket prices!

But...

I'm (as are my partner and colleagues) still dedicated to the principle that no one should be prevented from seeing our productions because of money! One way to ensure that will be to always follow the rule we have:

"No One Refused Admission for Lack of Funds".

However, that is for the odd circumstance and cannot be a regular practice.

So we've come up with the following idea.

We raise the ticket prices, but our regular attendees will always receive e-mails, postcards or flyers that enables them to get cheaper tickets.

However:

We may allow discounts only on the first two or three weeks of a six week run; to encourage early attendance and quicker spread of the word of mouth, the best form of advertising.

So members -- please bear that in mind. From January, we will probably adopt this policy.

The Discount Offer May or May Not apply to guest productions.

New Rental Prices

The rental of Luna Theatre to outside groups at the low prices we have charged so far has not been a fully justifiable exercise.

First there is the simple desire in the members of our group to have the time and the opportunity to do their own work. We didn't start this theatre to make money. We established it so we can stage plays. Then there is the fact that if a group or individual does not rent (say) the whole weekend (at least three days) at full price, the basic rent of the theatre itself for that week is not covered. Remember, our overheads are nearly $4000 a month, so a weekend should bring about an income of at least $1000 for us just to break even.

Consequently, on the rare occasions that we rent out the theatre to outside companies, we would expect at least $1200 for (say) a four day weekend. This is not a cheap rent, we realize that, but we have no choice. We can offer lower prices for non-weekend, or one off rentals of a day or two, especially if the intended presentation can be staged without affecting the stage sets of the main production at the time.

Some other odd bits & pieces

The Telephone at Luna Playhouse

The (818) 500-7200 number phone is put on Do Not Disturb mode just as a performance begins. So if you are calling to find out about ticket availability, the directions, etc. please do so before the scheduled performance time.

Late Arrivals

The door of Luna Playhouse is noisier than we would have liked, and in any case, even when slightly ajar, it allows the roar of the traffic on the busy San Fernando Rd to overwhelm anything a medium voiced actor can produce.

So if you are late, please do not attempt to knock on the glass door (especially with a metal object) or rattle it to attract the attention of the house manager inside. There's always someone near the door who can see you (within a short period of time) even if you cannot see inside. That person will at a suitable moment let you in.
